Juntos Summer Academy, 2015

Background

This project was part of the 2015 “Juntos” Summer Academy. The Juntos Summer Academy is a week-long college experience, held at North Carolina State University. Juntos works to unite community partners to provide Latino 8-12th grade students and their parents with knowledge, skills, and resources to prevent youth from dropping out and to encourage families to work together to gain access to college. Research shows that immigrant Latino youth are at a much higher risk for dropping out of school than their peers. The Juntos Program reduces this risk by supporting Latino youth through these formative years to graduate from high school and go into college for rising 9th to 12th graders from across North Carolina.

A total of 126 youth from seven counties across the State of North Carolina were represented from counties including Wake, Wayne, Forsyth, Yadkin, Durham, Sampson, and Johnston. Hands-on workshops covered subjects like STEM, Design/Textiles, and Forensic Anthropology, as well as leadership, identity development, goal-setting, 4-H clubs, writing skills, and how to pay for college.

Within their county groups, over 100 students worked with their mentors to create a collage quilt square with a group poem that represented their hopes, dreams and wishes for their communities. Each student then traced their own handprints, collaged backgrounds, and together the handprints with the county squares created a large "community quilt" that depicts the strengths, challenges and dreams that they face individually and as a network of communities across North Carolina. The reflections and artwork were combined into a digital and print booklet.
